Radical Lasagna Magazine Spread

This project was created for a digital illustration class. The assignment prompt was to think about one of my favorite foods that I have fond memories of and create a 2-page magazine spread containing fun and expressive illustrations in the same vein as Lucky Peach magazine. The magazine spread was to detail memories associated with the food, and optionally provide details on how to make it, while heavily injecting my own personality in both the writing and illustration. Overall the professor made it clear the point of this project was for each student to create something different, fun, and uniquely personal.

Developing this project was incredibly fun! I immediately knew going to the project I had to pick lasagna as my topic. I started off the project by writing my article while trying to be comedic and interjecting my personality. After writing my article, ideas just came naturally and I took to the sketchbook and began pumping out imagery that I felt reflected the content I had written. I started off with many concepts and slowly narrowed down which ideas communicated the fun and wacky nature of the article. I designed characters, and a landscape while experimenting with the composition to create a dynamic and lively scene that guides the viewer’s eye throughout the piece.

I was very proud of how this project turned out. I feel the illustration itself reflects the article but tells a story in itself. The lasagna is riding a can-opener-skateboard implying he opened the can of sauce, dumped it over, and then proceeded to skate around the environment. My professor loved my various concepts and was impressed by the final illustration. A few small changes were requested by the professor during development, which simulated working with a client in the field. This project was very different than most, and while it was a little strange, it was fun to be given a set of parameters and then have almost complete creative freedom beyond that.
